Spinning for chub, asp & barbel

Water and place: rivers Vltava and Berounka in Prague surroundings

Date of fishing: 09.09.2017

Weather and water conditions: air temperature +12-23 C, water temperature +18 C, cloudy morning with quite low temperature, hot and quiet afternoon with sunlight, evening with some rain clouds

Fishing method: spinning with plugs (vobblers)

Tackle and baits: 1,8 m (6 feet) & 2,7 m (9 feet) Shimano rods with Tica spinning reels and 0,15 mm braided lines, plugs from Rapala with natural colors

Catch in total: approx.25 bites, 12 fish landed including mostly chubs, one asp and two barbels

The biggest fish: unfortunately pricked after 5 minutes fight, looked like a big barbel

Special features of a fishing day:This time I’ve made a short fishing trip with couple from Finland across Prague’s surroundings including two rivers: Vltava close to the city center and Berounka 30 km from the city. To tell the truth it was difficult to find unique fishing adventures this time, especially for anglers from the “country of thousand lakes”, but on the other hand fish species as barbel, chub or asp could be a great new experience.

So the main target before noon was a chub in Vltava, which can reach here an impressive weight up to 3,2 kg (7 pounds), but a few bites brought us just very average fish up to 1 pound in weight. Furthermore the strong morning sunlight against current blinded a fish after 8am, so we had to move finally to another “hot spot”. After one hour of fishing again with small chubs the group of barbels was located in the long channel close to the center of main current. Some of them was successfully hooked together with one 2,5 pounds asp. Finally the largest barbel after intensive fight run away…. After delicious lunch in a local eatery we continued fishing on different spot. However, the weather suddenly changed and the fish stopped cooperating. One nice 17 inches chub closed the fishing day.

Clients: Jan and Milla from Finland

Photo report:

River Berounka near Prague Nice asp was carefully released
Strong fight with big barbel Happy angler with the same happy barbel
